History
and Mission of PSAA
Introduction
With more
than 4,000 graduates from the Department, it was felt that a sufficient
critical mass existed to support a functioning alumni. This was also in
line with NUS’s policy of promoting outreach programmes and networking
with the public at large.
Against this
backdrop, in October 1996, the then Head met with a group of Political
Science alumni to discuss the possibility of setting up an alumni
association. On 30 November 1996, a Pro-tem Committee headed by Mr
Derrick Loh was established to oversee the registration of the PSAA with
the Registrar of Societies.
In April 1997,
the Pro-tem Committee applied for registration through the Dean, Faculty
of Arts and Social Sciences and the NUS Alumni Affairs and Development
Office. The registration of the PSAA-NUS was approved in August 1997.
The PSAA-NUS was
formally launched on 22 May 1998 in NUS. This was in conjunction with
the 37th anniversary of the Department of Political Science, which was
established in May 1961.
Objectives
of the PSAA-NUS
- To cultivate close links
and foster a spirit of understanding and goodwill through fellowship
among its members.
- To interact and co-operate
with the Department and render necessary assistance that may be
required from time to time for the benefit and enhancement of the
Department and its members.
- To encourage and organise
academic, educational, social, cultural, recreational and civic
activities among its members.
- To provide a
recognised means of communication and rapport between the Association
and their Alma Mater, the Department of Political Science, NUS.
